Boxes are essentially things with an empty space inside and a lid on top. They do come in all sorts of shapes, and some are more functional than others.
These boxes are all made from 4 segments of the same wood, separated by 3 layers of veneer, and completed by a lid made from rosewood or zebrano. They provide ideal decorative storage for small items on a desk or anywhere else in the house.
The idea for this piece came from a demo by Mark Sanger, where he made a similar box from a single piece of orange osage. In my case, the material is beech and there were two independent blanks of the same size. And, of course, the knob on top [...]
This box is made from bubinga and ash. Bubinga is an African hardwood, with a very nice figure and it polishes to a very nice natural sheen. The lid on this box is made from a piece that was cut out of the main body and then inserted into an o [...]

A winged box made from walnut and maple. This is a classic shape for wood turners, who regard boxes like this as a "must do" to show they have acquired the necessary skills. It is rather tricky to turn, but also very rewarding. For the end use [...]
This box is made from sycamore, with some guilt varnish on the rounded corners and blue stain on the main body. The wood is spalted, which did give me quite some grief when trying to get a nice finish on the top and bottom, only once it was sa [...]
A while ago some good friends of ours cleaned out one of their sheds, and found, much to their surprise, a whole lot of wood, either cut up for turning, or clearly cutoffs from other turning jobs. The main body of this box is from one of these [...]
A small box made from beech, with a decorative button on the lid. This could suggest that the box is meant to hold buttons, but this really is only a suggestion. The button is made from panga panga, a wood very similar to wenge, and in fact it [...]
