Derrick Hale bought a square bowl made from rippled sycamore at the 2016 Chatsworth International Horse Trials. Here’s what he had to say:
“It was good to meet you on Sunday at the Chatsworth Horse Trials. I thought that you would like to know that platter I bought from you as a gift for my daughter Alyson was very well received. We called in and presented Alyson with her gift, which she carefully unwrapped and looked at closely, tipping it against the light in order to see the figure in the wood (just as you did when you were explaining this to my partner). Alyson is aware of “fiddle back” figure through music and my own work and recognised this immediately. The piece was then put away, temporally, “before the boys (my grandsons) can get their hands on it”. However, I know that “the boys” will learn a lot from that piece of wood and your work in time.”
