Every now and then I get a piece of wood that is special. This was one of them. My tree surgeon told me he had this piece of ash, which he couldn’t use as firewood because it wouldn’t split, and asked if I wanted it. Well, let me tell you, the reason it wouldn’t split was that it had a tremendous amount of curling and quilting going on. The piece was so thick that I cut it into two blanks and made two very beautiful dishes.
Believe it or not, the green stain is one single colour. All the shades and variations are produced by the varying shades of colour and hardness of the wood. A picture struggles to show all that’s going on here, you’d have to hold it in your hand.
